Diapers are not part of any low income assistance programs by the government. Disposable diapers are not cheap but because diapers have become a necessity from birth threw potty training some family's try to stretch the amount of time they leave the baby in a diaper. Leaving a baby in a soiled diaper can lead to infections and rashes. Why not try another option?
Modern cloth diapers can get expensive, but it doesn't have to be. For a little over 50$ you could have enough flats and covers for a single baby for 1 or 2 days. To cloth diaper comfortably for one day you need about 15 flats and 3 covers.
For a bonus money saver you can use cloth wipes! You can get them any where from 0-$2 per wipe. For the cheapest option you can get 50+ wipes out of a $2 cotton sheet..
Flats can also easily be hand washed. Much easier then other types of cloth diapers as they are thinner wash out better and dry very fast. This can also save additional money. You need minimal supplies to do this at home and only cost pennies per load!
You will need:
Laundry detergent $2+
Bucket or utility sink $5+
Plunger $4+
Gloves $2+
How to wash in 5ish steps:
1.. Pre-pre-rinse- with cold water rinse solids from your diapers (and wipes). Wring out and place where your going to store until wash time.
2.. Pre-rinse- with cold water rinse one more time to get any of the left over yuck off. Fill your bucket with your diapers put enough water to cover them and you can either plunge or use your hands to agitate them. Then Wring out everything again and empty your bucket.
3.. Wash- again place diapers in bucket and put enough hot water until it covers them. Then add a tablespoon or 2 of laundry soap then again you must agitate. After agitating Wring out the diapers and empty bucket. You may want to repeat this process 2 or more times to make sure you get them clean!
4.. Rinse- take your wringed it diapers and place them again in the bucket with clean water and agitate so done of the soap comes out. This has to be repeated until there is no more soap bubbles coming from the diapers
5.. Drying- your finial step is to shake it and either hand or lady dry
